I want to put up a new fence or replace an old fence on my residential property. Do I need a permit?

The following apply to residential fencing only:

  • The maximum fencing height in residential zones is 7 feet in the rear and side yards and 4 feet in the front yard.
  • Fences are to be placed on or inside the property owner's property lines.  It is the property owner's responsibility to determine where their property lines are, or where any easements on their property might be.
  • Building permits are required for concrete block or brick wall fences over 6 feet and high in the rear or side yards.
  • Building permits are not required for all fence types other than those noted above and not over 7 feet high in the rear and side yards.
  • Building permits are not required for fences no higher than 4 feet in the front yard.
  • Chain link fencing is not permitted in residential zones.
