Service Awards Program

Purpose 

The City of Wasco’s Service Award program aims to publicly recognize talented and devoted people and organizations who: go above and beyond, instill pride in the community, and facilitate a service culture. Additionally, their leadership and actions set a shining example for future generations of Wasco residents.

Committee

The Wasco Service Award nominations will be reviewed by a committee that will include the Mayor and the Mayor Pro-Tem (or appointed council member).

  • The Mayor will serve as the Service Award Committee Chair

A Public Notice was posted for recruitment of At-Large Committee members on 5/14/2020.

The City of Wasco is currently accepting applications for (3) At-Large committee members.

  • At-Large Committee member applications will be accepted for a two week time period Applications are due by 5:00 P.M. on 5/28/2020.
  • At-large committee members will serve the following years during their initial term:
    • 2 committee members serve a 3-year term
    • 1 committee member serves a 2-year term
    • After the initial term, At-large committee member appointed will serve a two-year term.

Service Awards Program

The Service award period will cover volunteer service during the fiscal year from July 1st through June 30th.

  • Nominations will be accepted by completing a nomination form
    • If nominated by another person/agency, nominee must acknowledge nomination with signature on the nomination form.
  • Nomination forms will be available on the City’s website and will be accepted for 30 calendar days (July 1-30).

The Service Award presentation will take place at the annual Wine and Roses event, or another suitable venue, tentatively scheduled for October.

Award Categories 

1)  Youth Service Award

What are the Requirements?

  • Youth must be between the ages of 12-18 years old and must have been enrolled in school during the award period.
  • Volunteer service must benefit the community of Wasco.
  • Volunteer service must take place within Wasco City limits.
  • Nominee must acknowledge (by signature) that they are being nominated for a service award.

2)  Citizen Service Award

What are the Requirements?

  • Citizen Award does not need to be a Wasco resident, however their service to the community of Wasco must warrant recognition at this level.
  • Volunteer service must benefit the community of Wasco.
  • Volunteer service must take place within Wasco City limits.
  • Nominee must acknowledge (by signature) that they are being nominated for a service award.

3)  Non-Profit Service Award

What are the Requirements?

  • Non-Profit award must be a registered 501 (c) (3); if not a Wasco resident, their service and actions must warrant recognition at this level.
  • Volunteer service must benefit the community of Wasco.
  • Volunteer service must take place within Wasco City limits.
  • Nominee must acknowledge (by signature) that they are being nominated for a service award.

4)  Educator Service Award

What are the Requirements?

  • Educator Award should be employed by WUESD or WUHSD and must be fully credentialed. Note: Administrators are excluded from competition
  • Volunteer service must benefit the community of Wasco.
  • Volunteer service must take place within Wasco City limits.
  • Nominee must acknowledge (by signature) that they are being nominated for a service award.

5)  Public Safety Service Award

What are the Requirements?

  • Public Safety Service award is open to any member of the Kern County Sheriff’s Office assigned to the Wasco Sub-station, any Kern County Fire assigned to the Wasco Station and/or any public safety staff member employed at Wasco’s Hall Ambulance for their contributions to the Wasco community.
  • Volunteer service must benefit the community of Wasco.
  • Volunteer service must take place within Wasco City limits.
  • Nominee must acknowledge (by signature) that they are being nominated for a service award.

6)  Life-Time Service Award

What are the Requirements?

  • Life-Time Service Award may self-nominate themselves or be nominated by someone who has first-hand knowledge of the person’s contributions.
    • Awarded to person(s) who have demonstrated a life of service and throughout their life have impacted and enriched the lives of Wasco residents and/or general community.
    • May be posthumously awarded.
  • Volunteer service must benefit the community of Wasco.
  • Volunteer service must take place within Wasco City limits.
  • Nominee must acknowledge (by signature) that they are being nominated for a service award. N/A for posthumously nominee. 

Judging Criteria

Applicant’s voluntary service will be weighed in the following categories:

  • Community Involvement/Engagement (50 points)
  • Community Impact (25 points)
  • Outstanding Representative for the City of Wasco (25 points)
